3 Pressing Reasons Why You Need A Kimono In Your Wardrobe

My PhD has been giving me hell recently, attempting to grind me into the dust as I sprint towards submitting at the end of September. Between editing my recalcitrant novel and bashing my less-than-profound musings into some semblance of a thesis, I have developed a nasty haloumi habit and have taken to shuffling around the house in my ancient dressing gown. Well might you ask: what does the sorry state of my doctorate have to do with the graceful kimono? I’ll tell you. It is precisely in life’s difficult times, when placing one foot in front of the other is a feat of endurance, that our souls can most benefit from uplifting attire. Ankle-length or cropped, vintage or high street, brightly patterned or embellished (like this marvellous H&M number) or muted and plain, I have never met a kimono I didn’t like. It is one of the easiest wardrobe items you could ever throw on in the morning, yet it has the ability to imbue a dull or grinding day with glamorous promise.

After a trying first half of the year, I have been thinking a lot lately about the noble phoenix and its ability to rise from the ashes in infinite renewal (my sister has a large phoenix tattoo on her back that is confrontingly fabulous.) The kimono has similar regenerating powers. Here are 3 pressing reasons why you really do need to add one to your wardrobe.

  1. They hide all manner of sins

Philosophising is all well and good, but let’s get practical for a moment. Whether your kimono is ankle-length or cropped mid-thigh, its generous and billowy cut makes it the ideal choice for new mums who want a bit of cover around the middle, or simply for those of us who would rather enjoy that bountiful Italian repast without contorting our bellies into Spanx. In order to rock a kimono you don’t require shapewear or the abs of Gigi Hadid. It’s an item of clothing that really does flatter different body types and shine in multiple situations in the real world. You don’t need to think too hard about what to wear underneath, either. I recommend a simple pant and top in a neutral colour, or else a good ol’ jeans/t-shirt combo. The goal is to let this stunning wardrobe item shine.

  1. They make you look arty and free-spirited

Have you ever walked into a bar in a black ensemble you’re really rather fond of only to find yourself blending into the furniture? In a kimono there is zero chance of that happening. You will stand out as an arty and free-spirited type whether you can in fact wield a paintbrush or not. Case in point: the gallery opening I attended recently in this very kimono. Despite the fact that the room was stuffed full of creatives whose unabashed self-expression was on evident display, when I breezed into the gallery there was a turning of heads. Once you have tracked down your ideal kimono, I encourage you to whip it out at every opportunity. Dropping the kiddy-winks off at school or hightailing it to your bosses’ elegant soiree? Your kimono works equally well in both situations—and countless others. How refreshing.

  1. It’s an excellent excuse to go vintage shopping

This H&M kimono is hardly vintage: it was pumped out by a modern factory sometime last year. I love it regardless. But you know what I love more? The traditional Japanese little boy’s kimono I uncovered at my local antique barn. Awash in swirls of emerald green and cobalt blue and with stains inside that speak to its history, it is a treasured piece in my wardrobe. Stories seep from its tactile fabric. If you’re after a kimono that is truly unique, get your girlfriends together and mount a trip to an antique centre or good vintage store. You might just come away with a family heirloom.

Well friends, it’s time for K and I to pop up to Noosa for the weekend to restore my sanity. See you on the other side! 🙂

  1. Looks great on you and love your choice of shoes. Cannot believe that kimono is from a high street shop! Noosa in winter is heavenly. Hope you have enjoyed a few visits to Massimo’s.

    1. Hi Nadia, I couldn’t believe it when I found this kimono at H&M either! Given the level of detail with the beading it was a steal at $99 – quite possibly the bargain of the century. And I’m with you – I adore these Sophia Webster cage booties. If only I’d thought to get them in black as well! Our 4 days at Noosa were like a dream: breakfast at Season every morning, walking the national park, a fab dinner at Locale – and of course, Massimo’s every single day! My hubby reckons he’s found the perfect flavour combo with pistachio and cinnamon… Thanks so much for reading and commenting. 🙂

      1. Yes the cinnamon is a standout for me and the kids too. I pair it with macadamia myself but also love the pistachio and hazelnut…mmmm. Have a great weekend and I hope the phd pain is minimising!

        1. I agree, cinnamon is hands-down the most delicious flavour. And the pistachio is up there with the best gelato we tried in Rome. Thanks so much for your PhD well wishes – the pain is still there, but not long to go now! Planning a trip to Bali for straight after I submit is helping somewhat… Having something bright and shiny to look forward to is the best medicine. 🙂
